An abortion is a decision about your pregnancy, so it makes sense to understand your pregnancy first.

A positive pregnancy test confirms the presence of pregnancy hormones. Still, it doesn’t tell you everything you need to know in order to protect your health and understand your available options.

At Metro Women’s Center, we offer referrals for free, confidential, limited ultrasound so you can get answers before making your decision.

Confirm the Pregnancy’s Age

Many women estimate how far along they are based on the first day of their last menstrual period.

An ultrasound provides a more accurate estimate of gestational age, which is highly accurate as well as important because the abortion pill is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Identify the Pregnancy’s Location

Not every pregnancy develops inside the uterus. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the pregnancy implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube. An ectopic pregnancy requires immediate medical treatment rather than an elective abortion because, in an emergency scenario, this can result in a tubal rupture.

Confirm your Pregnancy’s Progress

A positive pregnancy test doesn’t always mean the pregnancy is continuing to develop. A positive pregnancy test means that the pregnancy hormone, hCG, has been detected.

This can still be present even after a recent miscarriage.

Because miscarriage is common, an ultrasound can determine whether the pregnancy is viable. If you’ve miscarried, you’re not eligible for an elective abortion.
