An unplanned pregnancy can feel like the end of your future. And while it is a bump in the road, it’s not the end of your life. Talk with a client advocate at Metro Women’s Center, and we’ll show you why.
My period is late; so now what?
If you suspect you might be pregnant, we are one of your best resources. There could be many reasons why your period hasn’t started. Issues like rapid weight gain or loss, a hormonal imbalance, or increasing your exercise can all cause a late period. A pregnancy test, taken at the right time, is your first step. For your convenience, we offer no-cost pregnancy tests.
How can you tell I’m pregnant from my urine?
A pregnancy test detects the hormone known as hCG. Women begin producing hCG shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. If a pregnancy test is positive, it means hCG was found in a pregnant woman’s urine.
When should I take a pregnancy test?
If your menstrual cycle is regular (every 21 to 35 days) and you have been tracking it correctly, you can take a test 1 or 2 days after your missed period. If your menstrual cycle is irregular and varies from month to month, we suggest waiting 6 to 7 days after your estimated time. You are likely to get more reliable results if you wait until a week after your missed period.
Even if you’ve taken a home pregnancy test, we still recommend coming in for one of our free lab-quality tests. Our test is usually more accurate, and we can make sure you follow the directions correctly and take them at the right time.
The test was positive. What should I do?
If your pregnancy test is positive, we will give you a referral for an ultrasound. You need the information only an ultrasound can provide, like how far along you are, if the pregnancy is growing, and where it is located. If you are considering an abortion, how far along your pregnancy determines the method available to you.
Once you have all the information you need, it’s time to sit down and talk about your options. If you choose to continue your pregnancy and eventually parent your child, we can provide you with several resources. We can also make referrals to adoption agencies in your area.
